Tea was bought by a British Merchant Robert Bruce. Among Indian it was however Maniram Dewan who take lead to tea plantation in Assam with many other Assamese followers. After Independence as the scenario change Indian Companies like Birla, Tata became biggest producers of Assam tea. Assam is the biggest producer of tea in India. There more than 1000 tea gardens in Assam. Tea garden workers are originally bought from Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The Government recognised them as a backward class know as Tea Tribe.
Economically tea garden workers are backward and literacy level among Tea Tribe is extremely low. Tea Tribe such as Chawra, Chauotal, Munda, Kol, Kharia, Bhumij, Gonju etc. They celebrate festival like Tusu Puja, Karam Puja, Lakhi Puja, Durga Puja, Nag Puja etc. Among them Tusu Pujaand Karam Puja are their prime Puja. Also they workship tree which is known as Dangria Puja.
Languages they speak Nagpuri, Odia, Santhali, Kurukh and Bengali etc. They belong to religion like Hindu, Sarnaism, Christianity and Muslim. They work in tea garden whole day but they get salary of Rs. 1400 hundred on 12 days (according to our survey). They get the facility from garden like umbrella, sandal, tea (quality is bad). They survive very simple as miserable life. The main dance of Tea Tribe is Known as ‘Jhumur’. They also sing a song when they pluck leaves in the garden like ‘ati kali duti pat’. When they dance Jhumur girls wear white sari with red border and boys wear dhoti-kurta.
